beginners guide/affordable makeup starter kit for beginners

When I first started getting into makeup, I was downright clueless! I never had someone telling me what not and what to do when it came to makeup. I ended up purchasing numerous cosmetic items that my skin hated, all because I didn't  know what products I needed for my skin type.

I've been wanting to do a blog post like this because I know makeup can be overwhelming; especially when you have no idea what undertones and skin type you have. In this post I will be explaining skin types, undertones and the best affordable makeup products you can get when starting out with makeup.

                                                        Undertone:

Many people think their undertone (skin tone) is the shade of their actual skin- no, that is your complexion.  Undertones are the pigments in your skin that doesn't change color; whether you're tanned in the summer or pale in the winter .There are 3 classifications for undertones: warm, cool and neutral.

Warm undertones are when your skin leans more towards the golden and yellow side.

Cool Tones are when your skin is more on the red and pink side.

Neutral Tones  is a mixture of both warm and cool tones.

 Under tone test:
 I
n my opinion, the best way to detect what undertone you have is to look at the veins on your wrist. By looking at your wrist you will be able to tell what undertone you have.
   Blue/purple veins= cool toned
green and blue veins= neutral tones
  green/olive veins= warm tones

 Skin types:

you get 4 skin types: normal, dry, oily and combination.

'Normal' refers to a well balanced skin- not too oily, not to dry.

Dry skin is a skin type that produces less sebum than normal skin. Dry skin lacks the lipids that  retain moisture. You can tell you have dry skin when your face feels tight and dull.

Oily skin  is a skin type that has an over production in sebum.

Combination skin is when you have an an oily forehead, nose and chin and relatively dry cheeks.

Affordable Makeup Starter Kit:

  1. Primer and moisturizer:

Primer and moisturizer is key to a flawless skin. It is important to prep your skin because your foundation will go on smoother and it will prevent your foundation from looking cakey and patchy. My two favorite drugstore primers are the NYX Angel Veil primer and the Maybelline instant pore eraser. These primers are amazing and I absolutely love how flawless my skin looks when I apply it.

 2. Foundation and Concealer:

When it comes to foundation it is important to choose a foundation that is suited for your skin type.

For dry skin I would recommend the LA Girl Pro HD Foundation.  If you have dry skin like me, you'll know how tight your skin can feel. This foundation is perfect for dry skin as it is hydrating and it feels lightweight on the skin.

For oily skin I would recommend the L'Oreal Infallible Pro matte foundation. This foundation doesn't slide off, it is full coverage and long wearing and it will stay in place all day!

For combination/normal skin, I would definitely recommend trying the Rimmel 25 hour long lasting foundation. This foundation hydrates your dry areas maintains your oily areas.

I have always been very picky when it came to concealers. I tend to invest my money into a high end concealers; however, the La Girl pro concealer has never failed me. It is crease-less and long wearing.

   3. Setting Powder

Its important to set your face with powder otherwise your makeup will slide off during the day and it will be a complete waste. I highly recommend the Rimmel London stay matte powder as it sets your makeup into place all day.

4. Eyebrows

There are three ways to fill in your eyebrows: powder, pomade and pencil. Since this is a beginners guide, I would recommend using a pencil or powder, simply because you have more control and its easier to apply.

                                                 Essence brow powder

                                                        LA Girl slim brow pencil

     5. Bronzer

Since this is a beginners guide,I decided to exclude contour. I absolutely love this essence sun club bronzer. It gives this flawless and glowy  look to the skin and it smells amazing! Bronzer is great to warm up your face. You apply it on your cheek bones and at the top of your forehead

     6. Blush

Blush is an essential in any makeup bag. It stimulates a natural glow, it makes you look healthy and younger. I highly recommend the L'Oreal  Paris True match blush in 'baby plum'. This blush is beautiful and I love how soft and sweet it looks on the apple of ones  cheeks.
     7. Eye-shadow

These eye-shadows apply easily, they blend well and they aren't chalky. This palette is perfect for individuals on a budget and if you're just starting out with makeup. I couldn't recommend it enough.

   8. Mascara
This mascara is outstanding! its been my go to for years. Its volumizing and lengthening, its inexpensive, it doesn't smudge and it lasts all day!

    9. Highlighter

This Catrice highlighter is soft and the pigmentation is great! The coverage is buildable and I love the intense glow.

  10. Lipsticks

For lipsticks I decided  to include satin and matte because everybody has their own personal  preference.
If you're more of a matte kind of girl, I would recommend the NYX lingerie lipsticks. They have a 'moussy' like feel, and the coverage is build-able. If you're more of a satin girl, I would recommend any of the Catrice satin lipsticks as they are highly pigmented and feel smooth on the lips.
